At the Table with Meg McGillen

For Meg, a beautiful home isn’t one that feels finished. It’s one that has been collected slowly, filled with pieces that carry a story and allowed to become more meaningful with time.

Growing up with parents who had a great eye for design taught her to notice the little things early on. Later, her time at Ralph Lauren and Schumacher deepened that appreciation, shaping the way she thinks about craftsmanship, quality, and the details that make something feel special.

“I never want our home to feel too perfect or like everything was bought at once.”

Instead, Meg gravitates toward a mix of old and new. Antiques sit alongside pieces found on travels. Things she and her family have chosen themselves live next to those that have been passed down from generations before.

Some of the most meaningful are also the most ordinary.

“The everyday dishes on our kitchen table are actually the dishes I grew up with.”

Her mom has passed along so many things that hold special memories from Meg’s own childhood. Now, she gets to create new memories with those same pieces with her own children in their home.

It’s that continuation she loves most: objects gathering new stories without losing the old ones.

That same collected sensibility comes through in the pieces Meg chose for her table: Sally Floral in Buttercream, Sally Floral in Nantucket Blue, and James Stripe in French Sage. A mix of soft color, floral shapes, and classic stripes that feels layered rather than matched, and right at home alongside the pieces she already loves.

Her philosophy also means nothing in her home is too precious to actually live with.

“I really believe life is the main event. Use the beautiful things, even with little kids.”

Let the dishes come out for an ordinary dinner. Let the antiques live in the rooms where everyone gathers. Let things get a little worn and loved along the way.

Because for Meg, that’s what makes a home feel personal. The stories, the memories, and the patina that only gets better with each generation.

Perhaps the best pieces in our homes are the ones that eventually become someone else’s childhood memories.
